Leonard Dorrian – Piano

Leonard Dorrian began musical tuition at the age of 6 in southwest Donegal with renowned local piano teacher

Kathleen O’Donnell. At 13 he attended St.Finian’s College, Mullingar where he was awarded a scholarship and studied piano with Padhraic O’Cuinneagain and organ with Shane Brennan as a member of the Schola Cantorum. He subsequently pursued a Music and Nua-Ghaeilge at NUI Maynooth, studying piano with Anthony Byrne and Leonora Carney and organ with Gerard Gillen and John O’Keeffe. Further study followed and he completed an M.A. in piano performance and interpretation in 1996 under the guidance of Leonora Carney.

Leonard has wide and varied experience as a piano teacher, having taught at DIT, St.Patrick’s College Drumcondra and for over 10 years at NUIM. He also has many years experience as piano accompanist for exams and recitals. He was rehearsal accompanist to the Choral Society at NUIM for 8 years. He is also an examiner of The Royal Irish Academy of Music since 1998.

Very much in touch with his roots and native language, Leonard has accompanied Enya and Moya Brennan in concert and plays organ for Cor Mhuire Derrybeg regularly under the guidance of Maire Bean UI Bhraonain.

Leonard joined the Sligo Academy as Head of Keyboard and accompanist in September 2010.
