Cathal Roche, Saxophone/Clarinet/Jazz improvisation
Cathal Roche has been at the forefront of producing innovative new music in Ireland for the last 10 years and continues to build a reputation at home and abroad as a creative saxophonist extending techniques and devising new compositional mediums. Cathal’s recent collaborations have been the Kimura – Roche Duo(with pianist Izumi Kimura), Dao(with Polish percussionist Rafael Kolachi), and crOw (with composer Ian Wilson).
Well known in jazz circles though his 20 year involvement with Dublin jazz ensemble The Dirty Jazz Club, Cathal has also performed with many collaborators from the classical music world such as the Vanbrugh and RTE ConTempo string quartets, pianist Hugh Tinney and many others. Through support from the Arts Council of Ireland, Cathal is currently developing a body of surround sound music works for solo saxophones and 32-speaker dome. A regular tutor at the Sligo Jazz Project, Cathal currently teaches woodwind students in clarinet, saxophone, flute and oboe with the Roscommon County Youth Orchestra and has been teaching clarinet and saxophone students at the Sligo Academy of Music since 2017. He also offers tuition in ear training, jazz theory, jazz improvisation, composition and reed ensemble (clarinet/saxophone all levels).
